We enjoy educating our customers about the properties of different metals. Here is a closer look at 3003 aluminum, what it is, and what it’s used for.
What is 3003 Aluminum?
3003 aluminum sheet is a pure, affordable, commercially-available aluminum with moderate strength and corrosion resistance. It is easy to weld, and can be hot or cold worked. This aluminum is very easy to cut and form, and has about 40% of copper’s conductivity. Its strength, affordability, and attractive high-polish surface finish make it a popular choice for any application where looks and function are important.
Properties of 3003 Aluminum
3003 aluminum is considered to be a pure aluminum because of the low percentage of alloys it contains. It has the following chemical makeup:
- Aluminum: 96.8 to 99%
- Copper: 0.05 to 0.20%
- Iron: 0.7% max
- Manganese: 1.0 to 1.5%
- Silicon: 0.6% max
- Zinc: 0.1% max
- Residuals: 0.15% max
This metal is able to be cold worked, but does not stand up to heat treatment. Like other metals, when its strength is increased, its brittleness also increases. It is commonly rolled and extruded, but is not forged or cast. This aluminum has excellent workability and weldability.
Uses for 3003 Aluminum
Storage tanks, tool boxes, walkways, decorative trim and chemical equipment are frequently made from 3003 aluminum. It is also commonly used as a sheet metal in roofing applications, for gutters and downspouts, signage, kitchen utensils and cooking equipment, truck beds and trailers. Its attractiveness and moisture resistance make it a good choice for siding, awning slats, and all kinds of ornamental exterior work.
